Introduction

The family name KERRELL, in it's current form, has been around for about 400 years. The family name is much older than that, having originated from Robert de Cryel, a sub-tenant in Sussex mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Robert was originally from a town now known as Criel Sur Mer in France and was the ancestor of the "ancient and baronial" family of Criel of Kent. Robert also appears in several versions of the Battle Abbey Rolls. These documents purport to list the knights that fought alongside William, Duke of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings (1066). However these documents were all written some time after the event and therefore do not offer any proof. The direct male line of this important family is documented as having died out in the 15th century. In 1460 Sir Thomas Keriel of Westenhanger, Kent was slain at the second battle of St. Albans whilst fighting for the house of York.

A lot more of detail about Robert de Cryel and his descendents can be found on the Curl family website

There have been many spelling variations over the years and those so far documented include KERRILL, KERRIL, KERIEL, KIRIELL, KYRIELL, KYRIEL, CRIEL, CRYEL, CREOL, & CRUEL. There is also a Scottish family, M'KERRELL.

The purpose of this website site is make available information gathered about the origins of the name as well as it's surviving forms. Family tree information is available back to the early 17th century. Some data on, as yet, unconnected family members is available from the mid-16th century.
